     SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT AND WELCOME
Please help us in welcoming the newest members of the Harman Mystery family, Barry and Linda Bolewicz of EasyGo Farm in Oregon.  They have graciously agreed to share their knowledge and their pictures with us for the Louderback series.  Linda said it was love at first sight when they discovered alpacas and they bought their first two females in 1993.  They easily fit in with the goats and sheep they already had.  You can learn more about them by visiting them at their site, www. . . . , on second thought, please visit the Louderback page for that information.  Otherwise, you might go there first and become so engrossed in it you'll never get back to see what's happening with JJ. Click on the Bad Hair Day picture for easy access to Louderback.
We are proud to announce our current line-up:

  • Peggy Herrmann’s Book Review will cover Mary Higgins Clark's new novel, Where Are You Now?  She'll also be listing titles that will be reviewed over the next few months.
  • Join JJ for a new Louderback mystery.  Her new yarn and demonstration shop is enjoying great success, but a new element has come into the area.  Is that why there are strange things happening around JJ’s Alpaca Ranch? Look in now and thank you for your patience during or delay.
  • Grammar ABC’s will be covering specialized punctuation marks.  The entertaining examples of how and when to use them are ready for you to view.
  • Arlene helps you with the question of Research in It’s A Matter of Opinion.  She has some interesting ideas on how and when it is best to do research.  Drop in to see what they are and, as always, feel free to express your opinion.
  • A new animal character for upcoming Ted Peters Mystery novels will be featured on the Reader’s Corner  page.
  • An Exciting New Feature:  Each month we will be featuring the work of a different author.  Click on Author Page or Kennan's picture to find out more about him.  If you would like one of your stories to be featured on our Reader's Corner page, please submit your story via e-mail to arlene@harmanmysteries.com for consideration.  We felt that new and experienced authors alike would get more exposure if they were put on the Reader's Corner page.  Please bear in mind that this site is dedicated to the art of writing and to providing clean entertainment that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages.
Bad Hair Day
Linda Bolewicz is rummaging around for a suitable picture of her and Barry.  Until then, this windblown guy will stand in their stead.  While he's cute, I'm sure we'd all like to know what Linda and Barry really look like.

Announcements
This is how I looked when I came to my new home at the tender age of ten weeks.  That is the age I will be and how I will look when I first come to Adrietta Bay.  Look for me in Logical Consequences, due out in July, 2008.

SAFETY ZONE

Safety zones.  We all need them.  Why?  Because we live in a world filled with stress.  Even those who appear to have the perfect life have stress.  Take me, for example.
From all outward appearances, I have it made.  I have two big cats who dote on me.  They give me treats, play with me, and love me.  Every paper bag or box that comes into the house is given to me.  Strange thing about that, though.  Some of them seem to disappear after a few days.  I have a few boxes that have been around a long time and a couple of paper bags.  You’d think there’d be more, wouldn’t you?  Oh well.  The mystery of the disappearing bags and boxes will have to be left for another time.  Right now we’re talking about safety zones and why they’re needed.
As perfect as my life seems to be, I have stress.  You see, there’s these stray cats that come around.  Some of them look very strange.  My big cats refer to them as raccoons and skunks.  They smell different than the other stray cats and sometimes they scare me.  Then there’s my big cats.  We play a lot, but sometimes they start getting the better of me and I don’t really like that.  So I head to my safety zone and they honor it.
My big cats have started a new business.  I never knew so much went into starting and running a business.  It keeps them busy and stressed.  They don’t think a little cat like me notices these things, but I do, and some of their stress rubs off on me.  For one thing, some of the time they used to spend on me they now spend on the business.  Now that’s stress!
So, what is my safety zone?  The boxes.  Once I jump in one of those, my big cats tell me I win and they leave me alone.  Whenever I get scared or tired, I head for one of my boxes.  One of my favorites is by the front door.  It’s what they call a French door, so I can see out.  I’m double safe inside the house and inside my box, but I can still keep an eye on my world.

Finding Your Safety Zone

Just as everyone’s fears and stresses are different, so are their safety zones.  For example, when Peggy gets really stressed, she likes to either work in the garden or take a bubble bath.  For the bath, she lights a candle and puts something called “Serenity” on the CD player.  It sounds like running water and some quiet musical instruments.  She’s says both are better and cheaper than a shrink, whatever that means.  Jack heads for what he calls his Ham shack.  He talks to people on a radio, finds out things on the Internet, and does other things on the computer.  He plays music, too.
I have two hammocks that sit on the window sills.  One is in the bedroom and the other is in Jack’s Ham shack.  Those, too, are my safety zones, but I allow my big cats to pet me when I’m in those.  That’s how they’re different from the boxes.
What helps you to shut out the world?  Do you like to read?  Paint?  Garden?  Go to some special place?  Whatever it is, don’t forget to do it.  It doesn’t matter what other people think of your choice.  Remember, what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another.  What matters is that we all respect each other’s safety zone.
How can we get others to respect our safety zones?  Two things are necessary.  First, we have to make it known to others what ours is and politely request that they leave us alone while we are in it.  We need to reassure them that they are loved, but we need to have some quiet time.  The second thing we need to do is learn what those close to us want for their safety zone and respect it, regardless of what it is.  Remember, what works for one doesn’t work for another.

Until next time, Happy Mousing,
Cricket

P. S.

You know those stray cats I told you about?  One has been coming into my house and she doesn’t understand about safety zones.  She has no respect for what is mine.  I don’t like her.  Do you think it would be okay if I smacked her good next time she comes in?  The thought makes me happy, but I probably won’t do it.  As I said, she doesn’t understand.  I guess it would be better if I tried to teach her.

Coming Soon!!
The long-awaited Ted Peters Mystery, Logical Consequences, is scheduled to be released in July of this year.
What's it About?
A few days before Dr. Ponder was found murdered, the skull of a man was found in Hunter's Forest.  However,  Dr. Ponder was the richest, most loved citizen of Adrietta Bay.  That made his case have higher priority than identifying the Hunter Forest victim.  Margo Fraser, the beautiful ME, worked on the skull in her spare time, struggling to come up with a face for the victim.
The day after the Ponder case was closed, the portrait she drew was published alongside one an expert from New York provided, based on a different technique.  The very morning the pictures are run, a wealthy philanthropist named Celia Carrollton is murdered.  It appears they both died the same way.  Is there a connection or is it merely a coincidence?
Much to his displeasure, Ted is called in to investigate.  As usual, nothing is simple.  The investigation is complicated by on-going problems with Sgt. Les Williams and Sgt. Paul Bragdon is moving.  Add to that the concern that Margo may go to New York to pursue a career with Dr. Whittaker, the forensic specialist who provided the other picture for the paper.  As the investigation progresses, long-buried sins are uncovered, resulting in some interesting events, including a life-threatening situation for Ted.
Was it deliberate?  A warning?  An Accident?  We'll never tell.  You'll have to wait until July, pick up your own copy of Logical Consequences to find out for yourself.  You won't be disappointed.
